Art 20 Nyc
Best places to live in NYC (for 20-somethings)?
I am relocating to NYC from Chicago and would like to know where are some of the best places to live. Here is my criteria:
Close to transportation
An area with a lot of young people (24-34 range)
plenty of access to art/music outlets
reasonably safe (I am from Chicago so my standards may be lower than yours)
price is negotiable at this point so that is not my top priority. Surrounding myself with peers is more important.
Thanks!!!
I am moving at the beginning or middle of August depending on how things go.
Rent is not a big priority b/c I am financially secure. I am aware of the living expenses in NYC. It is more important to me to live with and around great people in my age group. I’ll pay more for a great location/roommates.
i’d suggest the Morningside Heights / Columbia University area just above the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
the neighborhood not only has Columbia, but other institutions of higher education like Manhattan School of Music, Bank Street College of Education, Jewish Theological Seminary, and Union Theological Seminary.
so it has a good population not only of undergraduates, but graduate students, law and business students, faculty, and other 20-30 somethings who have gone to Columbia and chosen to stay in the neighborhood after graduation while working elsewhere. of course, MH has people of all ages, all ethnicities, and many families with kids.
i live only a 10 minute walk south of Columbia, and enjoy the neighborhood quite a lot. it’s still in Manhattan, but away from the super hustle and bustle and the oppressively tall buildings of Midtown and Downtown. the #1 train runs right under Broadway, with stops at 110th and 116th Streets, and there are also local busses that will take you to either the Upper West or Upper East Sides. and the nightlife’s pretty good up here also.
so take a visit if you can. i think you’d like it.
