Any one attend a art school?

I would like to hear preferably from people that go there for there visual art talents but any one would be good? these are my questions,

How hard was it to get in? what type of mediums where in your portfolio? Did you have an Interview?

What are the people like there? Are they friendly?

How many hours a week would you put into your art?

Do you have to have experience before you go there or do they accept more for talent?

any other details would be awesome I want to apply there!

I went to an art school but it was more for graphic design than studio art. I’m not sure which type of art you’re looking into, but in any case, at my school the process was the same for studio artists and designers. So…

The way is was set up was that they enrolled you in 5 low level art classes (drawing, painting, photography, 3D art, and printmaking). That was your entire first semester. Then at the end you put up everything you did that semester in all your classes up in a gallery along with everyone else and they did a judging be the instructors. Either you passed or they had you repeat a course that you may have been weak in. The next step was an interview where they sat you down and asked you why you wanted to be in the art program…..things like that. You had to screw up pretty hard in the interview to not pass it. If you failed the review (either part) you could re-enter your work once more the following semester.

More colleges are doing things this way because they understand that not everyone has the same access to art programs in their highschool, so to expect everyone to have a portfolio of stuff to be judged already when they get to college is just unrealistic. Especially since highschool are cutting the budgets for the arts more and more. This way, it’s easier for them to start everyone off on even ground to make a more fair decision.

Very friendly. But I think artists in general are more laid back like that. And I’m even still friends with some of my old professors to this day, 7 years later.

Ugh, I don’t even like to think about it. To tell you the truth, I basically lived in that art building. It was open to art students 24 hours. I slept their about twice a month. It was like that for a lot of people. But then again, it was fun to stay up with other art students, do some work, get some food, screw around in an empty building. Some of the best nights I had in college were the ones when we were all in the basement at 5 am with bloodshot eyes and a final due the next day.

Like I said above, it wasn’t like that for us. When it have to judging our work at the end of that first semester it was all about the talent. When that art went up in the gallery, you kind of knew who wasn’t gonna make the cut.

Bottom line, don’t worry about it. My one piece of advice is to get to know your instructors. Make sure they know who you are. Ask questions and show them you’re interested and engaged. It sounds totally unfair, but art professors tend to be a little more easy on you if they like you, and that can sometimes mean the difference from getting in to the program for someone they’re on the fence about.

Good luck and have fun! :)
