People with high functioning autism can be taught at an early age to express themselves through different forms of therapy. To lead a life relatively normal, high functioning autism requires a certain level of social skills. The development of these skills can be achieved through a number of therapies including play therapy, social classes or specialized groups, psychotherapy, social stories and expressive therapies.

An expressive therapy that has proved very beneficial is art therapy. Art therapy can help autistic develop a social response to let them express their emotions through art. This form of treatment Courtesy can be an ideal way for an autistic to develop social skills.

What is art therapy? It is a therapy that involves the use of a series of various art materials such as paints, batik (a form of dye), clay, etc. as a way to express thoughts or feelings through the representation visual. Art therapy is based on psychological research and theory that art is naturally therapeutic. This therapy takes into account the behavior, thoughts and feelings experienced by people with high functioning autism and other disorders.

Art therapy allows an individual to explore various issues including those involving family, relationships, life change, loss, abuse and overall development. Can be done as a group process or a private attorney. The work of art created during therapy can be spontaneous creations or based on suggestions provided by a therapist.

What are the benefits of art therapy? Art therapy has many benefits, especially for an autistic, because not based on verbal skills or language, is a fun activity, and requires no art skill or experience. The following is a list of other benefits —

 • Increased self-awareness

 • Develop social skills

 • Changes behavior

 • Develop troubleshooting strategies

 • Allows a person to engage in creative thinking in a safe environment

 • Allows an individual to focus exclusively on the activity at hand and closed thoughts of others that may be intrusive.

Note that all positive results above art therapy can not be experienced by a person with autism high functioning. Remember, not all of them autistic features.

Where can I find and art therapist and what should I look? If an individual with autism high functioning are interested in art therapy, art therapist must be sought. An art therapist can practice in a number of environments, but usually can be found in psychiatric or general hospitals. They may work in oncology or geriatric wards, schools, rehabilitation centers and counseling centers. The best way for you to find an art therapist at the local level, is to talk to your child care health provider or call your hospital.

When choosing a therapist, note the following:

 • Find out about their educational backgrounds and where they received training

 • Find out if you have previous experience with patients with high-functioning autism

 • Ask what type of treatment approach is what I use

 • Ask what to expect during a lesson
