The Art Element Form

wich is the most important form of art, music or painting?
I know that most of you will say there´s no such thing as a most important art, that this is not the way things are and blah blah blah… oK, I agree, but let´s pretend, just pretend, we had to choose one of these two. Wich one is the most important? Wich one can be a better vehicle for the expression or communication of emotions and ideas, translate the most abstract feelings or formal elements for their own sake as mimesis or representation?
I’d say the lost art of the storyteller, but since I have to choose one of your examples, it would be music.
Music, which can be expressed as a simple beat on a handy item like a rock, or complex melodies derived from many instruments playing together, is one of the oldest forms of communicating an idea. While art, in any form, can appeal to a wide variety of cultures, cross cultural boundaries and defy region/ethnic/cultural associations, music doesn’t. A song they find soothing and beautiful in, say, India, would be more noise to us in America. The music of a region/culture/ethnic group uniquely expresses their feelings…their religious views, their cultural oddities. Celtic music perfectly expresses the Celtic heritage…also, music doesn’t necessarily need words, so you have two areas of music that are equally expressive…pure music and orally based music.
While I wouldn’t say it is “the most important”, I will say this…it is the most immediately identifiable.
