questions about art portfolios and review days?

I am entering my senior year of high school and I need to start building a portfolio of art work for college. What are some of the “must haves” in a portfolio and what are colleges really looking for? I was also wondering what national portfolio review days are and what happens there. Who are they open to? Do I bring originals? Do I make an appointment? If so, how? Thank you for your time and help!

DO BRING YOUR ORIGINALS! The college reps look at them, they don’t ever keep them Like that person said.
Each school has there own port requirements- like for MICA you need a bike drawing. But a good general rule is to show work in more than 1 media, put in a self portrait, a drawing of an interior space. Put in as many works from life as you can- not drawings from pictures. You don’t need an appointmet for the National portfolio reviews, but you do if you tour the school, etc. Make an appointment with an admissions counselor for a private tour and review.
